Thabiso was singing. “Lerato has sorted things out with me,” said Thabiso. “Lerato is brave,” Neo said, and he laughed. “Don't start with your jokes, man,” said Mali. “I don’t know what Lerato sees in Thabiso,” Neo laughed again. “In other words, are you in love with Lerato?” Thabiso asked.  “Thabiso man, I can’t do that. Lerato is my friend,” Neo said. “I see you’re attracted to her,” Thabiso said. “Neo is Lerato’s friend. Do you think he would do that?” Mali asked. Thabiso picked up the phone and called Lerato; her phone was off. “Lerato doesn’t have time for you,” Neo laughed. “Guys, I forgot to take my lunchbox. Lerato found herself wondering why Neo had said that. “I broke up with that person, we're no longer together, I don't even know what he did.” “Thabiso fights people. Yesterday, he fought with everyone,” said Neo, looking scared. “Thabiso needs help, I need to help him,” said Lerato. “No, break up with him,” said Neo. “Thabiso needs help; we need to make an appointment to meet with a counsellor,” said Lerato. Neo wasn't happy about that. “I don't think Thabiso needs help; that person is stubborn.” “You don't have to give up,” said Lerato. “Friend, I'm helping you here. Lerato Mokoena was a young woman raising her five-year-old daughter  who is  Mbali, in the struggling township of Molakeng , an informal settlement where poverty was a harsh reality and electricity was only beginning to be installed. Most residents cooked using paraffin stoves and lit their homes with candles. Lerato was a single mother, abandoned by her boyfriend, and barely surviving on irregular peace jobs. It was difficult to provide for herself, let alone her child. Mbali didn’t attend a creche, and Lerato often left her alone in the shack. Most days, Lerato could be found drinking at a local shebeen in Molakeng. “Government has failed us,” she said one afternoon, taking a long sip from her bottle. Her neighbor and occasional friend, Thuli, sat beside her, frowning. “I don’t like what you’re doing. You have a daughter to care for.” “Don’t stress me,” Lerato snapped. “Her father should be taking care of her. He’s the one who left.” “That doesn’t matter,” Thuli said firmly....

THE UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

Moabi was exhausted, and it was a busy day in town. His sample catalogue was tucked under one arm, and a forced smile was  plastered to his face.   “Afternoon, sir! May I interest you in ….. ” “Not now!” the man snapped, brushing past without a second glance. Moabi  exhaled and tugged at his shirt collar. The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows. He checked his watch. He wasn’t just tired , he was invisible.  Even with a job at a furniture store that paid commission , Moabi felt empty, like a background character in someone else's  success story. Dreams of becoming someone important once burned brightly in him. Now, they flickered like dying embers.   That evening, he  slumped onto a stool in a crowded tavern, beer in hand, shoulders heavy.   “This job…” he muttered, “it’s eating me alive.”  Across from him, Phehello raised a brow.  “You’re not the only one who started from nothing, my friend.” “I envy those salary people,” Moab...

BLOOD ON THE FARM

Today’s youth are struggling because of the high rate of unemployment in South Africa. Many have graduated, but they are still roaming the streets, while others are using drugs and drinking alcohol. Kamoho, Themba and Sibusiso were young boys who finished Grade 12, but they faced many challenges in life. These young boys applied for jobs, but there was no luck. To get a job, you need to have a connection. Kamoho was playing Ludo with his friends, and there was nothing they could do. “Guys, this hunger is killing us,” Kamoho looked worried.  “When you look for a job, you need to be connected,” Themba added. “We need to come up with a plan,” Sibusiso suggested. These boys looked at each other. “You are right,” Kamoho rolled the dice. “Do you have anything?” Themba asked. “We need to rob a farm.” Sibusiso was not happy about Kamoho’s opinion.  “You are out of your mind, you will get us killed,” Sibusiso said.  “Sibusiso is right, those people have guns,” Themba added....

Moment with my father.

The taxis and cars whizzed by on the street, their headlights casting a warm glow on the wet pavement. On the corner, a group of boys were engrossed in a heated game of soccer, their laughter and shouts carrying through the crisp winter air. The atmosphere was alive with the smell of smoke wafting from chimneys and the distant hum of traffic. I sat on the couch, my phone clutched tightly in my hand, a wide smile spreading across my face. My mother, busy peeling potatoes in the kitchen, couldn't help but notice my expression. "Sipho, what's got you so happy?" she asked, her curiosity piqued. I looked up at her, my excitement bubbling over. "It's about my father," I said, barely containing my enthusiasm. My mother's eyes lit up with interest, and she put down the potatoes, wiping her hands on her apron before sitting down beside me. "Tell me everything," she encouraged, her smile warm and inviting. I took a deep breath, launching into a stor...

Jealously is death

The rising sun shone like gold, and it was interesting. It’s been a week since Lerato finished matric. Lerato was Mmampho's daughter, an intelligent girl. “Mom, it’s time to focus on the future,” excited Lerato said. Her mother was a God-fearing woman, the woman who had a powerful belief. “I am excited to hear that you are focusing on the future,” Mmampho said. “So tell me which career is suitable for you?” her mother asked. “I want to be a security officer,” Lerato smiled. Mmampho doubted her choice.  “I don’t think the career is good for you,” Mmampho advised her. Lerato felt bad after Mmampho instructed her to choose another career. “Come on mom, I am worried about the crime rate in our hospitals," Lerato said. Her mother understood and allowed her to study the career of her choice. “I will talk to your father,” Mmampho said. Lerato was very excited. During the conversation with her daughter, Mmampe visited Mmampho. Mmampe was a heartless witch. “What do you want?” Mmampho...
