Hauted Building

There were officers chatting and having tea at the office, it was so chilly and no one wanted to work outside. The officers were security guards and they used to guard gold. “Man today is our payday,” George said. Everyone was excited about payday.  “Guys, we need to host housewarming, after a long time I managed to buy a house,” Joseph said with excitement. “You are right, we need to host it,” Mpho said. Everyone was so happy about Joseph’s achievement. A panel van stopped by, it was not just a van; it had robbers who prepared themselves to steal the gold, within a blink of an eye a gunshot was heard. “Guys prepare yourself!”  George instructed, taking a gun. “Open here and go down!” Ta Mike shouted, a hardcore gangster.  “No one is opening here guys and we need to protect this gold,” Mpho sweated. The room they were in had an emergency door, Mpho and George found their spot outside the building and saw five people, they leaned against the wall. “Gosh, there are s...

Whispers of the Forgotten episode 9

As time went by, Thabiso visited Lerato at her home and found her washing clothes. “Honey, I came to see you. Are you still well?” Thabiso asked. “I told you to leave me alone,” Lerato stopped washing and looked at Thabiso. “Oh, honey, are you turning on me?” Thabiso asked. Lerato felt disgusted. “I don’t date people who were imprisoned,” Lerato said. Thabiso felt humiliated and knelt down in front of Lerato. “You are the woman I have loved since we first met,” Thabiso wiped away tears. Lerato was silent and surprised. “Stop, you are embarrassing yourself,” Lerato said, lifting Thabiso up. Thabiso got angry and pushed Lerato away. “What are you doing?” Lerato asked. Thabiso glared at her and approached her. When he raised his hand, Thabo appeared. “What are you doing, boy?” Thabo asked, approaching him; Thabiso jumped back. Thabo punched him because he already knew who Thabiso was, and Thabiso also punched him back. Lerato saw that someone was going to die and called the fight off...

The Last Choice

She had been in a coma for three weeks after the car accident. The doctors had said the swelling in her brain was irreversible. There was nothing more they could do.  His wife was lying on the bed, helpless and hooked up with machines and pipes. Thabo held her hand,  his memory was thinking about their best time , her stubbornness, and the way she’d danced barefoot in the kitchen. He felt like a coward, but he couldn’t keep watching her like this. Machines were keeping her alive , not life itself. Dr. Khumalo entered quietly.   “I’m sorry,” he said. “There’s been no change. At this point, the only thing keeping her heart beating is the ventilator.”   Thabo nodded slowly.   “I need to think,” he whispered.  Thabo appeared to be someone who had isolated himself from others; he was not thinking clearly . Karabo’s family arrived that evening :  her mother, Mme Mas etjh aba, her brother Kabelo, and her younger sister Naledi. The room quickly filled with ten...

Whispers of the Forgotten episode 8

Lerato saw on the news that Thabiso and Mali were the ones who killed her friend and were out on bail. The news made her feel bad. She met with Thabiso at the restaurant. “My dear, tomorrow I’m going to Mangaung to look for a job,” said Lerato, staring at Thabiso. Lerato didn't want to tell Thabiso that she was breaking up with him. “Hey, my dear! I just got out of prison, and suddenly you are leaving?” Thabiso asked. “I’ve been looking for a job for a long time, so I thought it would be good for me to take it,” said Lerato. “Don’t worry, my dear, I’ll come visit you.” “No, I don’t want to because I won't have time,” said Lerato. “What have I done?” Thabiso asked.  “I don’t trust you anymore. I saw in the news what you did with Mali,” said Lerato. Thabiso was surprised. “My dear, you saw that the evidence was not enough, which shows it wasn’t us,” said Thabiso. “You forget that I know the law. I don’t want to hear anything from you. I told you to change your behaviour,” said Le...

Whispers of the Forgotten episode 7

Thabang was busy in his office preparing to solve another case when he saw someone knocking on his office door. “Can I help you, sir?” Thabang asked. “I have a sensitive message to share with you,” Lehadima said, a man who gives the police information. Thabang dropped everything and listened to Lehadima. “Sit down, sir,” Thabang said, looking at him. “There are two men I saw yesterday afternoon, and I think they buried something there,” Lehadima said. Thabang adjusted his tie. “So you suspect something like drugs or what?” “I think it’s drugs, and I identified someone,” Lehadima said. “Can you give me the names of those men and take me to that place?” Thabang asked. “These men were driving a ‘Platberg Brick’ truck, and I only identified Thabiso,” said Lehadima. Thabang was surprised, and he believed Lehadima. “Man, do you know that what you said can get you in trouble if you don’t tell me the truth?” Thabang asked, staring at Lehadima. “Officer, I am telling you the truth, I will not l...

The Bitterness of Crime

I was swollen with pride, Hatred became my only friend. But the people turned against me, They hunted me like a snake. In the shadows where I wandered, fear clung to me. My heart ached to disappear. Sirens wailed in the night, Police searched high and low. I placed my hands on my head, Knowing they were after me. A crowd began to form, Their eyes burning like fire. They searched for me, to turn me into ash. They stared as if I were a storm cloud, The one that darkens the whole sky. But within my mind, peace stirred. I cast away crime like a poisoned fruit. I spat it out, it tasted bitter. I turned the page, And became human again. Brian Makara, 2025
