Lerato Mokoena was a beautiful and kind-hearted woman who believed deeply in love. She was engaged to the man of her dreams, and their wedding plans were already underway. But life changed in a single tragic moment. A terrible car accident took the life of her fiancé, Thabiso, while Lerato survived. Since that day, her life had been filled with grief, guilt, and loneliness. Hoping to find peace, Lerato decidedreturned to her hometown of Mahlathi, a quiet rural town surrounded by dusty roads, open fields, and an old railway station that once connected people and dreams. Lerato decided to return to her hometown called Mahlathi, a quiet rural town surrounded by dusty roads, open fields, and an old railway station that once connected people and dreams. Lerato was burdened by grief and regretted from losing her fiancé.
Dusty children were playing on the street kicking ball, cars hooting. Lerato was pulling her luggage bag, looking exhausted of a long journey she took.
“I need to go to the hospital tomorrow for check-up,” Lerato said. Her mother welcomed her with warm hands. “Welcome back my daughter,” Mmadibuseng smiled, hugged her. She was full of joy for seeing her daughter after a long time.
“It’s been a long day ma, I need to rest.”
“Please, have something to eat before you sleep,” Mmadibuseng Insisted.
“Okay ma,” Lerato pulled the chair and sat. “Remember that everything is going to be alright,” Mmadibuseng said. “Life is unpredictable ma, I was hoping him to be my husband.” Mmadibuseng held Lerato’s hand.
“I am always here for you,” Mmadibuseng said. “Thanks for supporting me, ma,” Lerato smilled. “Do you remember you have an appointment tomorrow?” Mmadibuseng asked. “Don’t worry ma, I have everything, transfer letter and a doctor's note.”
“I like that my daughter.” Mmadibuseng and Lerato had fun and shared stories.
Lerato went to the hospital for a check-up. “Hello sister, I am here for check-up,” Lerato said. “Welcome back Lerato, When did you arrived?” Ethan Khumalo asked, a nurse at the hospital. Ethan Khumalo, now a nurse at the hospital, had been Lerato’s school friend. Lerato froze, trying to remember where she met Ethan.
“Ethan, is that you?” Lerato asked, handing the file to her. “Yes my friend, I am so glad to meet you,” Ethan chuckled. “I am so happy to meet you. I can see you are a nurse, I like that,” Lerato smiled, hugging her. “My friend, what brings you here?” Lerato felt heartbroken. “Life is too short my friend, I got involved in a car accident with my fiancee and he didn’t make it. I survived.”
Ethan sat down with her at the waiting room, she was feeling the pain Lerato felt. “I am so sorry to hear that, I feel your pain,” Ethan said. “I was about to marry him, but this is it,” Lerato sobbed.
“Gosh my friend, we are on the same boat.”
“What do you mean?” Lerato asked. “My marriage failed, my ex-husband used to cheat on me, she betrayed me. I caught him sleeping with another girl,” Ethan said. “This is ridiculous, why are we facing such sorrowful moments friend?”
“I want nothing to do with love, I almost lost a life,” Ethan said.
“My friend, I still believe that I will meet someone in the future,” Lerato insisted. “For me, I don’t think so. Your time has arrived, go and see a doctor, we will chat later.” Lerato’s check-up went successfully.
Later that day, Ethan invited Lerato to lunch. “I used to eat with you, and the history repeat itself,” Ethan smiled, they both laughed. “I am aware about that, and it is so good to return home.”
“Boys used to chase at us,” Ethan laughed. “My friend, you were afraid to hang out with them,” Lerato said. “Come on, you know very well I was focused on my schoolwork,” Ethan said. “That was a good memories for both of us,” Lerato smiled. “Don’t say that, I remember jumping over the fence and going to the tavern for drinking beer.” They both laughed. “My mother was furious, she gave me few lashes. I went to bed crying.”
“We were naughty,” Ethan said. “These food taste so delicious and special,” Lerato said, taking a sip. “You can say that.” Letato was still hurt about her fiancee and she was in a denial. “Lerato, you need to heal, I can see that you are still hurt,” Ethan said. “What are you talking about?” Lerato asked.
“Accept that your fiancee has passed away,” Ethan insisted. Lerato had flashbacks. “I don’t want to talk about that, her sister is accusing me of murder,” Lerato sobbed. “Lerato, this is bad. I hope you reported her to the police, it was an accident.”
“She does not understand that, that woman is so scruel and I don’t think I will forgive her.”
“Relax my dear, forgiveness is very important, you will heal. If you don’t forgive her, your heart won’t heal,” Ethan said. “Did you forgave your ex-boyfriend?” Lerato asked. “Lerato this is different.”
“Why are you bringing this now? We are talking about our childhood life,” Lerato said. “Look my friend, I know you are still hurt, but….” Lerato interrupted her. “So you insist I must forgive her while failing to forgive your ex-boyfriend?” Lerato asked. “I won’t forgive him.”
“But you expect me to forgive his sister?” Lerato asked. Ethan stumed.
“Yours was accident…unlike….. mine.” Lerato left her friend there and felt that Ethan brought her news up.
Naledi who was Lerato’s late fiance's sister found out that Lerato moved to her hometown, she paid a visit and met Lerato at town. Naledi was still at grief because she accused Lerato of killing her brother, Thabiso. “This is where you are hiding yourself?” Naledi asked. “Naledi what do you want here?” Lerato asked. “You need to pay for your sins, you killed my brother.” Lerato laughed. “You must be out of your mind,” Lerato said. “Do you think I am joking?”
“Naledi stop it! I didn’t kill Thabiso, we got involved in a car accident.”
“Because you forced him to go to your stupid date!” Naledi shouted.
“Now you are being disrespectful young lady, you need to stop this act of yours,” Lerato said. “You will reap what you sow,” Naledi said. “I don’t have time to entertain you, I know you never loved me from the beginning.”
“Because you are just a farm girl who is uneducated, you wanted to use my brother as an advantage,” Naledi said. “A city girl who thinks low of me, I am not a lowlife, do you understand me?” Lerato said. Lerato had a backbone. Lerato left Naledi there and went home. Naledi never liked Lerato and she was blaming her for the death of her brother.
Lerato was confused and angry. “I don’t know why this girl keeps following me, I left Matwabeng because of her!” Lerato shouted, putting the plastic on the table, her mother was shocked. “What are you talking about?” Mmadibuseng asked. “I will break her neck!”
“Lerato what is wrong? You are being out of line,” Mmadibuseng said.
“Naledi is accusing me of killing Thabiso,” Lerato sobbed and sat. Mmadibuseng approached her and held her hand. “Don’t let anyone to downgrade you, I know you will fight this,” Mmadibuseng said.
“I didn’t kill him, I loved him. We were going on a date and got involved in a car accident,” Lerato cried. Mmadibuseng felt for her and they sat down.
“It is not your fault, you need to heal.” Lerato felt relieved. “I want to thank you for being with me,” Lerato said. “You need to heal because if you don’t, you are going to blame yourself,” Mmadibuseng insisted. “I need to apologize to Ethan,” Lerato said. Lerato went out after having a lunch.
Patiens waited at the waiting room, some were sneezing, some were chatting. Lerato arrived at the hospital to meet her friend. “My friend, I need to talk to you,” Lerato greeted. “Can’t you see I am working?” Ethan asked, writing the report. “I understand I shouted at you and I am sorry,” Lerato insisted.
“You need to come at the following day.”
“I am not going anywhere, you need to hear my side of my story. You are my friend and I don’t want to lose you,” Lerato said. “I know I was not suppose to ask about your private life.”
“It’s okay my friend, I am so sorry for shouting at you,” Lerato said.
“I have forgiven you, I don’t want to fight with you,” Ethan smiled.
“I forgive you my friend, healing is very important my friend.”
“A heart needs to be healed, I have decided to forgive my ex-boyfriend,” Ethan added. Lerato and Ethan had lunch and they enjoyed. A heart need to heal in order to have a better life. Lerato met with Naledi and explained to her that Thabiso was not supposed to die and she is remorseful. Naledi forgave her after Lerato told her about the important of forgiveness and that a heart needs to be healed.
