The Tale of Joy and Heartache Episode 5

Teboho assumed Palesa would never discover where he was working. He immediately suspected that Mpho had told her. Sitting in his office, rage burned inside him. Without hesitation, he grabbed his phone and called Mpho. “Hey, man! Why did you tell Palesa about me?” Teboho demanded the moment the call connected.

“What are you talking about?” Mpho replied, confused.

“Don’t pretend. Why did you tell her where I am?”

“I did the right thing,” Mpho said firmly. “You’re not being serious about this. She deserves the truth.”

“This is my life! You have no right to interfere,” Teboho snapped. His voice trembled with anger.

“I reprimanded you for breaking up with her because you’re running away from responsibility,” Mpho fired back. “You’re acting like a child. Be a man, go back to her. You hurt that girl.”

Teboho clenched his fists. Deep down, he knew Mpho was right, but his pride refused to surrender.

“You don’t control my life,” Teboho muttered coldly.

“You need to grow up,” Mpho said angrily before hanging up. The silence in the office felt heavier than before.

Meanwhile, Palesa sat in her mother’s house, tears flowing endlessly down her cheeks. The pain in her heart felt unbearable. Mmathabo, her gentle and loving mother, noticed her daughter’s sorrow immediately. “My child, why are you so sad?” Mmathabo asked softly.

“Mama… the things happening in this world are painful,” Palesa whispered.

“Talk to me, my child.” Mmathabo wrapped her arms around her.

“Teboho has gone back to Matwabeng,” Palesa said, her voice trembling.

“Don’t cry, my child. Maybe he will come back to visit you,” Mmathabo comforted her.

“I don’t think so, Mama. He treated me like a stranger… like I meant nothing,” Palesa cried. Mmathabo looked shocked. “Calm down. What exactly happened?”

“I regret falling in love with him. I didn’t know Teboho could be so heartless.”

“It is painful, my child. What he did is a great mistake,” Mmathabo sighed.

Suddenly, something changed in Palesa’s eyes. The sadness hardened into determination.

“I’m not going to leave him like this. Teboho must pay for what he did,” she said before storming into her room. Mmathabo remained seated, deeply troubled. She had always believed that love was kind and patient. But Teboho’s love had turned bitter, sour instead of sweet.

Nine months later. Palesa lay in a hospital bed, exhausted but hopeful. She had just given birth.

“Mama… I wish Teboho could see his child,” she said weakly.

“I hear you, my child,” Mmathabo replied gently. “I will speak to your father. I know he will accept this child as his own.”

“Thank you, Mama,” Palesa smiled faintly.

“My child, I promise you, this baby will bring joy into your life,” Mmathabo said with confidence.

Palesa stared at the ceiling, unsure. How could joy come from a situation filled with abandonment and pain?

“Really, Mama? I don’t see how,” she whispered hopelessly. “Trust me. This child is a special gift.” Before Palesa could respond, panic suddenly gripped her. “Mama, why haven’t they brought my baby back? They said they were going to bathe him.” She quickly pressed the emergency button.

“Calm down,” Mmathabo said, holding her hand. “The nurses will bring him. Don’t worry.”

“I’ve already pressed it,” Palesa replied nervously. A few minutes later, Dr. Rathebe entered the ward with a serious expression.

“Good afternoon. I hope you are feeling better,” the doctor greeted politely.

“We are fine, doctor… but where is my baby?” Palesa asked anxiously.

“Yes, please tell us,” Mmathabo added, her voice tense. Dr. Rathebe paused.

“I need you to remain calm. The baby is not in a good condition.” The words struck Palesa like lightning.

“What do you mean, doctor? That’s impossible!” she cried.

“Calm down, Palesa,” Mmathabo warned softly. “You must respect the doctor.”

“It’s alright,” Dr. Rathebe assured them. “The baby’s condition is critical. We need to transfer him to the provincial hospital for specialized care.”

“No… no…” Palesa sobbed. “This is Teboho’s fault. He abandoned me. Maybe someone bewitched me. I don’t understand what is happening to my child.” Dr. Rathebe stepped closer. “Please try to stay strong. We are doing everything we can. Your baby is fighting.” Palesa broke down in tears, fear swallowing her completely. For the first time, revenge no longer mattered. All she wanted was her child to recover.
