The Cost of Silence

The morning assembly was alive with the sound of learners singing and clapping. It was the start of the final term, and the air was thick with excitement until Principal Ntho took the stage. His voice was heavy as he addressed the crowd.

"We are aware that some learners are bringing drugs into this school," he announced. "This is a place of education, not a marketplace for substances. I am asking all of you to report any suspicious activity immediately."

The learners listened in a tense silence. But the solemnity of the moment was broken when Spiro and his friend, Killer, arrived late. It was obvious to everyone that they were high. Tshediso, a dedicated member of the Representative Council of Learners (RCL), was stationed at the gate.

"Hey, boy! Open this gate before you regret it," Killer threatened. When the guards hesitated, Spiro stepped forward with a menacing look. "If you don’t open this gate, there will be bloodshed." Terrified, the RCL members gave way. The duo marched into the school, shouting insults at the principal during his speech. "Hey, Principal! We aren’t scared of you. You’re useless!" A few learners laughed nervously, but the teachers were fuming. Faced with total disrespect, Mr. Ntho called off the assembly with immediate effect.

Later that day, Mr. Ramatlakane was in the middle of a mathematics lesson. "I hope you all understand how to solve for x," he told the class. The atmosphere was productive until Killer barged in, followed by Spiro. "Leave this class now!" the teacher commanded.

Spiro ignored him and walked right up to the desk. "You are not my mother, not even in your dreams," he sneered. Tshediso tried to slip out of the room to get help, but Spiro blocked the door.

"Where are you going, my friend? We need to talk," Spiro said with a terrifying calmness. He suddenly lunged, punching Tshediso hard in the stomach. As he groaned in pain, he realized the school was becoming a dangerous place for anyone who saw too much.

That evening, Tshediso sat at the kitchen table doing his homework. His father, Thabo, a security officer at the airport, watched him with pride. Thabo was a disciplined man who carried a service weapon for his job. "How was school, son?" Thabo asked, pouring some juice for his son. Tshediso didn't want to worry him. "Everything is fine, Daddy."

"I’m glad to hear that," Thabo replied. "Focus on your work. Education is the key that opens all doors."

But the peace didn't last. After Tshediso reported the drug dealers to the principal again, Spiro attacked him in class. When Thabo saw the bruises on his son, he knew something was wrong. "I was protecting other learners," Tshediso confessed.

Thabo’s face filled with fear. "I think you need to quit the RCL. You’re going to get yourself killed."

Tshediso went to the principal’s office to follow up on the bullying and the drug use. Mr. Ntho’s response was weak. "I haven't reached those learners yet, Tshediso. One day, I will reprimand them."

"Principal, they will just keep coming back," Tshediso argued. It was clear the principal was terrified of those two learners.

Desperate, Tshediso went to the staff room to see Mr. Ramatlakane. "The principal is doing nothing. Spiro and his friend have turned this school into a drug den."

"We are worried too, son," the teacher admitted.

"Then why don't you confront him?" Tshediso challenged. Mr. Ramatlakane had no answer.

Two weeks later, Tshediso captured a video of a major drug deal on his phone. He showed it to Mr. Ntho. This time, the principal went to confront the boys, but when Spiro pulled a knife, Mr. Ntho turned his back and walked away without a word. Watching from the hallway, Tshediso felt a cold realization: no one was going to save them.

That night, Tshediso waited until his father was deep in sleep. He stole the keys to the safe and took his father's gun.

The next morning, Killer cornered Tshediso in his classroom. "I told you, boy. Your principal is useless. We rule this place."

Tshediso didn't back down. "Listen to me, you moron. I am not scared of you anymore."

Killer swung a punch, but Tshediso was faster. He pulled the gun and pointed it at Killer’s chest. The classroom erupted in chaos as students fled to the office. Mr. Ntho arrived, trembling. "Tshediso, please, drop the gun!" The principal begged.

"You failed to bring order!" Tshediso cried, his hands shaking. "I warned you, but you chose to be a coward!" A shot rang out. Killer fell dead on the classroom floor.

The police arrived shortly after. Tshediso was sentenced to 30 years for murder. Thabo was arrested and fired for failing to secure his firearm. And finally, the Department of Education fired Mr. Ntho for his negligence. The school was quiet now, but the cost of that silence was three lives ruined.
